First day at work
My first day at work went very well. I was busy all day with orientation, meetings, and safety videos. I really like my coworkers and my boss (so far anyway) and I think they are all going to be good to work with. The high point of the day was that I was assigned a cell phone and laptop computer. The cell phone will likely become my primary phone in time. Don't worry, though, if you try to call the old number I will still answer (probably after 5). My work cell phone number will be circulated eventually as I get more accustomed to things. My laptop is nice and free. It is a small IBM thinkpad and I have a docking station at work with a 20 inch LCD monitor. My cubicle is pretty bare right now but is larger than I expected. I won't use it much though because I am being moved around for a few weeks until a permanent spot in the nickel billet group room opens up. In the mean time, I will use a coworkers desk who will be on travel for 3 weeks. The general feeling I have gotten so far is that I am being thrown in the deep end pretty quickly. I know they are there to help, but I will be expected to manage several contracts in a very short amount of time. I have also been informed that I will probably be traveling to the west coast very soon to meet all the clients. The best part of the day involved free lunch. My boss took me out to lunch at the "Allvac Cafeteria" as he calls it otherwise known as Taqueria La Unica. As the name suggests, the place is a mexican restaurant that is a couple blocks from Allvac. I think Allvac single handedly keeps this place in business as it was packed and at least 5 or 6 tables were Allvac people. The food was very good, very fast, and very cheap. We were in and out in 30 minutes for less than $11 total for the two of us. While I was experiencing work, Krista found a Jo-Ann's replacement and made some baby clothes. After work, I spoke with our mortgage broker and then our realtor. Krista and I have decided to accept the counter-offer from the sellers of the house we are pursuing. We are drawing up the official offer tomorrow after work. Here is a link with information and pictures from the mls. I still haven't had a chance to take pictures of my own for you. Finally, this evening Krista and I went to dinner at a place called Firebirds to celebrate my first day at work. The food was really good (Krista ordered the Prime Rib and I had pork chops). That's it for this update. Tomorrow completes our first whole week living in NC. It's been a crazy week and I don't expect things to slow down anytime soon. I'll keep you posted.
