My latest Invention

I've grown tired of dirty old socks filtering the drain water from our bird waterer. So I set out to find an appropriate filtration system. Unfortunately, good canister filters start at $110 and only hold about 1-2 gallons. This works fine for fish, but our birds bath in it and spray a couple gallons a week on the shavings in the cage. As a result, I need to add water all the time and a canister filter system won't allow me to do that. Then I had the idea to modify a normal filter so that the water supply is the drain. Luckily I had an old power filter that lost it's power. The impeller was bad, but it didn't leak so I was able to use it. I put the filter media in as usual and aimed the drain pipe down into the inlet (left) side. I then realized that the water flow was greater than this filter was designed for so I added plastic walls with silicone to allow for overflow. Additional touches include drilling a hole in the lid to dress it up and quiet the sound as well as inserting filter material in the front to aid in seed and wood shaving gatherability as well as to quiet the filter further. All in all it works quite well. I'm impressed anyway.
