Notes on Sushi...

So last night Krista and I went to a place called Bento Cafe in Gainesville in between work and House, M.D. (at a friend's place). Bento Cafe is kind of a Pan-Asian restaraunt with various noodle and rice dishes involving the traditional chicken, pork, beef, and fish. They are also known as a sushi bar. I've never had sushi, nor has Krista. So I took the plunge and ordered three different sushi rolls.

What follows are lessons learned from our first sushi experience:

1. Avoid any sushi that includes cream cheese. It just does something weird to the flavors and textures (that are already weird enough).

2. Tuna is pretty good. I enjoyed my tuna cali roll (cali is short for California, it's a popular American variation of sushi).

3. Krista is still not a fan of crab meat. I didn't realize until it was too late, but the one roll Krista tried had crab meat in it. It wasn't her favorite thing in the world at that moment.

4. Spicy rolls are pretty stinkin' good. I forgot what the sauce was called, but it was definitely my favorite.

5. Soy sauce can fix most sushi ordering mistakes.

6. Don't eat the pink shavings on the plate (pickled ginger or gari in Japanese). It's supposed to cleanse your pallete between different types of sushi. It's not very appetizing. At all.

7. What's all the hoopla about wasabi? It wasn't that good. It adds spice, but the other flavors it contains tend to mask the flavors in the sushi.

8. Will I try it again? Probably, though not for a while. At least now I know enough about sushi that if I'm ever taken to a sushi bar on business I can order something that I'll enjoy.
