You won't believe what happened today...

Meet Spike. Our friendly neighborhood iguana. I was cooking hamburgers out on the grill today and one of our neighbors asked me if that was my iguana "over there." I looked across the street and there was a 4 foot iguana in the grass. I said no and the neighbor left/went to town. I called Krista so she could see it and she thought he looked pretty cool too.

Well we debated what we should do. We didn't want its owner to lose their iguana if possible, but as far as we could see, no one was looking for it. We began to be afraid that someone had him as a pet and then turned him loose when he got too big to handle. About this time I had to take the burgers off the grill. How did he end up in the big plastic tub you say? Read on...

While I was removing the burgers, Krista decided that she should catch it so it didn't get away. So she went across the street, grabbed its tail, and fought with it to grab its body. Keep in mind this thing is 4 feet long! At this point I am coming towards the door with the burgers and Krista shouts at me to get a box. I quickly set the plate down on the car and ran in the porch to get the tub. In all the excitement, the plate with the freshly cooked burgers falls to the ground (upside down of course, so much for lunch). We managed to get him in the box. Now what?

Now for the happy ending...

After making some phone calls to various animal rescue organizations, all of whom told me he was too big, I took him to a reptile shop that didn't reject me on the phone. I guess that was because they wanted to reject me in person. He was just way to big. "But..." they said. They sent me to another pet shop that might take him. As they were telling me about the place they remembered that one lady that worked there had lost an iguana in the area near our home. When I got to the other pet shop they knew exactly who he belonged to. They ID'ed him from a scar on his front nose. As it turns out, his name is Spike. He is a show iguana (that would be an interesting show to go see). Apparently, the lady that owns him has a son. One day he decided to walk the iguana (this is supposedly not uncommon for Spike). What was uncommon was the son deciding not to put a harness on him. The son figured he wouldn't go anywhere. He was wrong.

So that was Spike's great adventure.

I didn't get any work done today as a result. Maybe next time.
